RLUSD and X402: Ripple Joins Linux Foundation's AI Agent Payment Protocol
Ripple has joined the Linux Foundation's X402 Foundation alongside Stellar, Solana, and other participants, working to establish open standards for machine-to-machine payments. RLUSD can already transact via X402 on the XRP Ledger, enabling AI agents to pay for services and resources autonomously — without human intermediation.

What X402 Is
X402 is an open protocol standard for HTTP-native payments designed specifically for AI agent workloads. The core concept: when an AI agent makes an HTTP request to a service, that service can respond with an HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code and a machine-readable payment request. The agent pays in a supported stablecoin, receives a payment receipt, and retries the request — all without human intervention.
The protocol is designed to solve a real problem in AI agent deployments: how does an autonomous agent pay for compute, API access, data retrieval, or other services when no human is present to authorize a payment? Credit cards require human authentication. Wire transfers require business accounts. X402 provides a standard that any blockchain-native stablecoin can implement.
Ripple's Position in X402
Ripple confirmed that RLUSD can already transact via X402 on the XRP Ledger as of the Foundation's announcement. This means the infrastructure is live — not a roadmap item. AI agents that want to use RLUSD for autonomous payments on XRPL have a functioning protocol to do so today.
For RLUSD, X402 opens a potential growth vector that is entirely separate from Ripple's existing ODL (On-Demand Liquidity) payments business. The AI agent economy — where millions of autonomous agents perform billions of micro-transactions — could become a significant source of stablecoin transaction volume. RLUSD's positioning within X402 gives it an early advantage in this emerging use case.
Why This Matters for XRPL's 8 Million Account Milestone
AI agents each require their own XRPL account to hold and transact RLUSD via X402. As agent deployments scale, each new agent population represents a potential cohort of new XRPL accounts. This is a structurally different growth driver than human user adoption — it scales with AI infrastructure deployment rather than with retail crypto market cycles.
XRPL crossed 8 million activated accounts on July 16, 2026. X402's adoption across AI platforms and agent frameworks could make that 8 million figure look modest within a few years — if the standard achieves the kind of adoption that HTTP itself achieved in internet infrastructure.
