Ripple has joined the Linux Foundation's newly launched x402 Foundation as a premier member, integrating XRP and its RLUSD stablecoin into an open-source initiative designed to standardize internet-native payments for AI agents and applications. The Foundation launched with 40 founding organizations including Amazon Web Services, American Express, Circle, Coinbase, Google, Mastercard, Shopify, Stripe, and Visa.
What the x402 Protocol Does
The x402 protocol is an open payment standard enabling AI agents, APIs, and applications to send and receive payments directly over HTTP — the same protocol the web runs on. The design goal is to make financial transactions as frictionless as exchanging data on the internet: no accounts, no checkout flows, no user approval required for automated systems.
Ripple said it has already integrated support for x402 on the XRP Ledger, allowing AI agents to transact using both XRP and RLUSD. This brings XRPL into a multi-party open standard alongside payments incumbents that historically operated entirely outside the blockchain space.
Why XRPL Fits the Agentic Payment Problem
Jazzi Cooper, RippleX's senior developer relations engineer, articulated the core infrastructure argument: "Most of the agentic payments conversation is still about what agents can do. The harder problem is how they pay for it."
Cooper pointed to XRPL's technical properties as directly suited to machine-to-machine payments: "On XRPL, that's already solved: 3-5 second deterministic finality, no gas auctions, no ambiguous pending states." She added that this eliminates retry logic and polling loops for developers building autonomous systems. "An agent doesn't need retry logic or polling loops, it just proceeds the moment a transaction confirms. That's the difference between infrastructure built for humans clicking 'approve' and infrastructure built for machines making decisions in milliseconds."
For AI agent workflows, the absence of gas price auctions and unpredictable pending states is not a minor feature — it is the difference between an agent that can commit to a payment in its decision logic and one that must build in failure-handling for every financial operation.
RLUSD's Role in the Initiative
Alongside XRP, Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin is also integrated into the x402 initiative. RLUSD provides a dollar-denominated settlement option for AI agents operating in contexts where price volatility would disrupt payment accounting — subscription-style API access, metered AI services, cross-border B2B payments.
The combination of XRP (for speed and cost in unconstrained agentic workflows) and RLUSD (for dollar-denominated stability in predictable payment contexts) mirrors the dual-asset approach Ripple has been building toward in institutional payments.
The Founding 40
The x402 Foundation launched with backing from 40 organizations. The list spans the full payments stack: AWS (cloud infrastructure), American Express and Mastercard (traditional card rails), Circle (USDC issuer), Coinbase (exchange/custody), Google (cloud + developer tooling), Shopify (merchant commerce), Stripe (payment processing), Visa, and the Stellar Development Foundation and Solana Foundation (competing blockchain ecosystems). Ripple's premier membership places it at the governance table alongside these players.
This is not a Ripple-branded initiative — it is a Linux Foundation open standard with Ripple as one of 40 founding participants. That distinction matters: it means XRPL compatibility will be built into the neutral spec, not a proprietary Ripple integration that can be forked around.
XRPL AI Starter Kit Already in Production
Ripple released its XRPL AI Starter Kit last month. With x402 support now live, Cooper confirmed those tools can already be used in production scenarios. Developers building AI-native applications with payment requirements can begin building against the x402 spec with XRPL as the settlement layer today.
